Grandpa T-Rex: One Year Old Today

One year ago today I created Grandpa T-Rex and his first ever cartoon. This is it...

Grandpa T-Rex...
...hates going to the Optician.

Basically this one year anniversary is an excuse to bring GT-R #1 out of the cupboard. After nearly 150 it's still my favourite, although a few have run awfully close. As you can see, he looks a bit different and a bit rougher round the edges to what he does now, but I don't mind that; it shows I've got better at drawing him. The fact is all cartoons undergo an evolution over a period; just look at early Dilbert or The Simpsons (not that I'm comparing to them in any way apart from to say that the more often a person draws something, the more they'll improve). The style of Grandpa T-Rex cartoons has always been deliberately crude - the idea I first had when drawing them was that they should look a bit like a caveman had drawn them - but over the hundred and odd cartoons he has become more refined, more expressive, and more 'T-Rexy'. He may be a year older, but Grandpa T-Rex is definitely looking better with age.

Grandpa T-Rex...
...isn't great at birthday party surprises.

You helped make it, you can't un-make it, it's GRANDPA T-REX #100!

Grandpa T-Rex...

...isn't great at family reunions.

So, here we are, Grandpa T-Rex #100. Who'da thunk it? I certainly didn't. It started off as one cartoon, then became two, then subsided for a while, then returned many months later and hasn't stopped since (barring the occasional week off). In fact, there are now more 'Grandpa T-Rex' cartoons than 'Too Close For Comfort' ones. I only ever thought I'd get to about thirty at most, but the ideas kept on popping up, the ink kept on flowing, and you good people continued to enjoy them. Before I knew it I'd drawn fifty and there was no sign of slowing. Now there are one hundred. One hundred. I don't think I've done one hundred anything in my whole life. Will I do one hundred more? Of course, but only if I can think of one hundred more jokes. Grandpa T-Rex will keep going as long as I think it's funny, and that's the way it's always worked. If I get to 199 cartoons and can't think of a 200th then there won't be a 200th. Simple as that.

A 200th would be awfully nice though.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I wanted to make the 100th a cartoon that everyone could enjoy and to say thanks to people for following the adventures of the cranky Cretaceous carnivore. So, a HUGE thanks is in order to everyone who submitted their own T-Rex to appear. I asked and you did not disappoint. Whether you were five or fifty you picked up your crayons, pencils and felt tips, and frankly you're all very talented. Thank god more of you haven't decided to become cartoonists or I'd have a run for my money. In the handy little guide below you'll be able to see who has drawn what. I had to resize some of them to fit, but otherwise nothing's changed. What you drew is what you see.

And if you didn't submit one then where were you, the Triassic?

The Artists:

1. Charlie, 2. Matt, 3. Alex, 4. Ben, 5. Thomas, 6. My Mum, 7. Grae, 8. Helen, 9. Spongehead, 10. Matt, 11. Grae, 12. Little Chris, 13. Matt (a different one this time), 14. Anonymous (ooh!)

I hope you're all very proud of your work. You should be. Thanks to you for your artistry, and thanks to everyone else who enjoys Grandpa T-Rex. And with No. 100 done I'll see you all tomorrow bright and early for No. 101...

Response to the 'Draw a T-Rex' for the 100th Grandpa T-Rex has been really fantastic, and folk from 5 to 50-odd have already submitted their dinosaurs. Very nice they are too. But with the 100th cartoon rapidly approaching there's only a week left before the submission deadline. Get your T-Rex drawing in by next Tuesday and it'll feature in 'Grandpa T-Rex 100'. Remember, you can use any materials you fancy and it can be as big, small or odd looking as you like. There's been everything from crayon to felt tip so far, and even one polka dot T-Rex , so the only limit is your imagination. Scan it or take a picture of it and send it to robsmedley21(at)aol.co.uk and then see your work along with eveyone else's.

Happy Drawing!

'My Grandpa T-Rex': Your chance to feature in the 100th Grandpa T-Rex!

So, 50 Grandpa T-Rex cartoons down, and I've set myself a target of getting to the 100th. I already know what Grandpa T-Rex 100 is going to be, but only if I get some assistance, because I want you, yes YOU, seriously, you, and a whole load of other people to be a part of it.

'How so?' You ask. Well, it's very simple. All you have to do is draw a T-Rex. See? Easy. Any pose, any size, doing anything or nothing at all. And saying you can't draw isn't a good enough excuse to miss out on the fun, because this isn't a competition; this is just something to get everyone having a bit of fun drawing. All T-Rex's will be accepted, no matter what they look like. None will be turned away. You can draw one in crayon or felt tip or paint or pencil or pen or whatever, and you can make it look as artsy or basic as you like Numbered List- colour it in, leave it uncoloured, give it stripes or polka dots or anything you like, there's no standard; every T-Rex is good enough (I mean, it's not like you'd have to try hard to outdo my efforts). And above all, have fun: put your T-Rex in a jaunty hat or glasses or give them a striking colour scheme. The more fun you have the better. All the T-Rex's will feature in the 100th Grandpa T-Rex cartoon, and you wouldn't want to miss out on seeing your prehistoric pencilled pride among them, would you? I've already got friends and family drawing their own T-Rexs, and everyone from young to old to very very old is having a go. The more the merrier! Get your friends and family to join in in they fancy: nothing brightens up one's day like drawing a dinosaur.

So it's that simple, draw your T-Rex, email a scan of it to me at robsmedley21(at) aol.co.uk (the (at)'s in brackets to prevents nasty spammers) and then wait and see your creation share a space with Grandpa T-Rex and a whole museum's worth of other T-Rexes. It'll be rawr-some!

What are you waiting for, get drawing!

THE 300th POST! And Grandpa T-Rex is 50 cartoons old today!

Grandpa T-Rex...

...is so old he's a fire hazard.

It's rather numerically fitting that my 300th post on this blog is also Grandpa T-Rex's 50th cartoon. It's also complete chance too. But it's a good opportunity to pause, put the pencil down, and say thanks to you, the small band of lovely folk who follow and enjoy this blog, and also a special thank you to those people who enjoy and Tweet about Grandpa T-Rex. I appreciate it all very much. Grandpa T-rex would too, if he knew what Twitter was. No doubt before the year is out I'll get to my 400th post, as there are plenty of good cartoons, dinosaur and non-dinosaur related, coming up. So until then I hope you continue to enjoy the stuff that's put up here, as I certainly enjoy doing it.
